If you’ve spent any time in Appalachia, you know how quickly your carry weight can spiral out of control. Whether you’re lugging around legendary gear, bulk junk, or aid items “just in case,” managing your inventory is one of the real arts of Fallout 76. Here are 22 practical tips I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) for balancing weight and utility without feeling stripped bare.

1. Use the Weight Reduction Perks

Cards like Pack Rat (for junk), Traveling Pharmacy (for chems), and Bandolier (for ammo) are essential. Don’t underestimate how much weight they save, especially once maxed out.

2. Optimize Your Backpack Mods

The High Capacity mod gives a straight weight bonus, while the Refrigerated mod is handy for reducing spoilage. Choose what suits your playstyle.

3. Store Bulk Junk in Stash or Scrap It

Bulked junk has lower weight than loose components, but even better—scrapping to plans or scrip when you’re flush keeps your stash from bloating.

4. Keep a “Mission Loadout”

Don’t carry every weapon. Pick what you need for the day’s objectives. A prime rifle is cool, but if you’re just farming scorched, you don’t need it.

5. Learn What to Drop

Some plans and notes have weight. Low-value aid? Eat it or drop it. Don’t be sentimental about 50 healing salves if you use Stimpaks anyway.

6. Use Your Stash Box Strategically

Your stash has a weight limit, but it’s your overflow. Reserve space for rare crafting materials and useful duplicate weapons you want to roll or trade.

7. Don’t Hoard Legendaries

Evaluate: Will you use it, sell it, script it, or display it? Hanging on to trash rolls kills your carry weight.

8. Take Advantage of Vendor Sales

If you’re playing on console, you can buy and sell with other players. Many offer Fallout 76 items for sale PS4 style trades or markets. Use this to offload unneeded gear or buy what you need without farming it all yourself.

9. Scrap Weapons and Armor Immediately

Don’t carry loot to “maybe scrap later.” Scrap it at the nearest bench for mods and reduce weight on the spot.

10. Use the Scrap Box

If you have Fallout 1st, the Scrap Box is unlimited for junk. It’s basically required for serious crafting without going insane from weight limits.

11. Avoid Carrying Too Many Chems

You don’t need 50 Buffouts. Keep your key chems to a small stack.

12. Watch Ammo Weight

Especially heavy ammo like 40mm grenades or plasma cores. Use Bandolier or Traveling Pharmacy perks for weight cuts, but also limit what you carry.

13. Craft Ammo in Bulk Then Store It

Make huge batches, then store them in your stash or a mule character. Only carry what you’ll use in one or two sessions.

14. Offload Caps Quickly

If you’re selling gear or trading Fallout 76 caps ps5 with other players, it’s smart to cycle caps into buying plans, ammo, or aid you’ll actually use. Caps don’t weigh anything, but letting them sit capped at 40,000 is wasted buying power.

15. Build a Vendor at Your Camp

Sell off extra stuff. Even if you price it cheap, it keeps your stash lean while giving you caps for the next thing you want.

16. Use Fridges if You Have Them

Spoiled food weighs the same but is worthless. Fridges reduce spoilage time, so your food lasts longer, and you waste less weight on spoiled items.

17. Build Display Cases

If you’re sentimental about certain weapons or armor, put them on display. It frees up your stash.

18. Don’t Forget Your Secondary Characters

Mule characters can hold plans, ammo, and spare weapons. Just keep them organized so you don’t lose track.

19. Check Your Armor Mods

Deep Pocketed is better for weight than Ultralight on many armor pieces if your problem is carry weight.

20. Don’t Carry Too Many Grenades or Mines

These add up fast. Decide on one or two types you actually use.

21. Learn What Junk You Really Need

Aluminum and adhesive? Always. Plastic? Usually. Other components? Maybe not. Don’t pick up everything mindlessly.

22. Practice Good “Run Hygiene”

Before you leave your camp or vendor area, always offload junk, scrap weapons, and check your weight. Start light to end light.

With these tips, you can get far more out of each expedition without needing to slow-walk back to camp. Fallout 76 rewards preparation and awareness, so treat weight management like part of your build. It’s not just about staying under 200 carry weight—it’s about maximizing utility so you’re always ready for what Appalachia throws at you.
